WHO Chief Counters Trump’s Rationale for US Withdrawal

WHO Chief Counters Trump’s Rationale for US Withdrawal
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the World Health Organization

The World Health Organization’s director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, on Monday sharply refuted US President Donald Trump’s reasons for withdrawing the United States from the WHO. Tedros dismissed Trump’s claim that the agency failed to implement urgently needed reforms, stating that over the past seven years, WHO has undertaken extensive reforms and is actively working to reduce its over-reliance on voluntary contributions by broadening its donor base.

Tedros also addressed the criticism that WHO demanded “unfairly onerous payments from the US” and highlighted the agency’s swift response to the Covid-19 outbreak, from issuing early warnings to establishing new initiatives such as the Pandemic Fund and the mRNA Technology Transfer Hub.

He emphasised that while challenges exist, WHO remains impartial, basing its actions on scientific evidence, and urged Washington to reconsider its decision, given the critical role the organisation plays in safeguarding global public health.
