The 36 state governors under the aegis of the National Economic Council, NEC, on Thursday, called for the withdrawal of the tax reform bill currently before the National Assembly.
Briefing State House journalists after the Council meeting, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State said that the decision was taken after NEC took a presentation from Taiwo Oyedele, the Chairman of the Presidential Committee on fiscal policy and tax reforms, who said the administration’s main focus is fair taxation, responsible borrowing and sustainable spending.
Governor Makinde said the council acknowledged the country’s underperformance across all indices related to major revenue sources, including the tax-to-GDP ratio and other indicators.
On 3rd of October, President Bola Tinubu had asked the National Assembly to consider and pass four tax reform bills. The proposed laws include the Nigeria tax bill, tax administration bill, and the joint revenue board establishment bill.
