World Food Programme Warns of Global Hunger Surge as Funding Falls Sharply

The World Food Programme has warned that funding shortfalls are set to deepen an already severe global hunger crisis, with more than 300 million people projected to face acute food insecurity next year. In its 2026 Global Outlook, the agency estimates that 318 million people will experience crisis-level hunger or worse—more than double the figure recorded in 2019.

Around 41 million of them are expected to reach emergency levels, equivalent to IPC Phase 4 or higher. Despite rising needs, the WFP expects it will only be able to support about 110 million people, far below global requirements. The organisation says it needs $13bn to operate effectively in 2026 but anticipates receiving barely half.
