As the clock counts down to the opening of the Edo governorship polls, Yiaga Africa, an election observer, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct a transparent and credible election that will meet the expectations of Nigerians.
In a pre-election statement, Yiaga Africa highlighted key issues, including security volatility, distrust in state institutions, and the electoral process.
The organisation also identified three critical tests that will shape the election, namely; an Impartiality Test for Security Agencies, ensuring the agencies act professionally without bias; a Resilience Test for Citizens, encouraging them to turn up and resist attempts at vote-buying and intimidation; and finally, an Integrity Test for INEC and capacity to conduct a transparent, credible, and efficient election.

Yiaga Africa expressed concerns over the campaigns breaking down into personal attacks, hate speech, and divisive rhetoric, potentially inflaming tensions among the electorate. It also hailed the peace-building efforts led by the National Peace Committee and urged parties to honour their commitments to the Peace Accord.
