Yobe SEMA Warns of Funding Gaps in IDP Resettlement

The Executive Secretary of the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Mohammed Goje, says limited funding and reduced international support are hampering efforts to resettle internally displaced persons (IDPs) across the state. He said despite improved security, many IDPs still lack access to basic needs.

Speaking on a TV interview monitored by Radio Now’s Newsdesk, Goje explained that the state had moved away from temporary camps and was now pursuing more sustainable solutions. According to him most IDPs have been resettled, except for those from Mandunari town, where critical infrastructure such as housing, healthcare, water, and schools is still being rebuilt.

He noted that the state’s resettlement approach involves three pathways which are return, integration, or relocation — with tailored support packages for each group. These include housing for returnees, support for host communities, and development initiatives to strengthen basic services in affected areas.

Goje also revealed that a new IDP policy has been developed to close gaps in key sectors like health, water, environment, and education. He highlighted the additional complexity of reintegrating rural and nomadic communities, which requires specialised livelihood and support plans.
