The Yobe State Government is set to host the fifth Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum in Maiduguri, Borno State, from January 29 to 31. The meeting will bring together governors from Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon, and Niger to discuss pressing challenges in the region, including security, humanitarian issues, and socio-economic development.
The Lake Chad Basin countries have been grappling with the long-term impacts of the Boko Haram insurgency, extreme poverty, and climate change. Over the past 15 years, the region has experienced widespread displacement, with more than 6 million people, including refugees and internally displaced persons, affected, particularly in Nigeria.

The forum, themed “Rebuilding the Lake Chad Basin: Consolidating Gains, Commitment to Peace, Cross-Border Cooperation, Security, and Sustainable Development for a Resilient Community,” aims to foster regional cooperation. Discussions will focus on addressing security and humanitarian trends, facilitating the return of displaced populations, and boosting cross-border trade to support economic recovery.
Governors will also engage in closed-door sessions to address regional challenges, while parallel discussions will involve civil society organisations, youth, and women. The forum will culminate in a follow-up phase to ensure the implementation of key recommendations and maintain accountability across stakeholders.
