Yobe to upgrade four mini-stadiums for sports development

The Yobe State Government says it will upgrade four mini-stadiums across the state as part of efforts to boost sports development and youth engagement. The plan covers facilities in Gujba, Potiskum, Nguru and Yunusari local government areas.

The Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Social Development, Alhaji Gidado Abubakar, disclosed this while addressing journalists during a media tour. He said construction of a new mini-stadium is ongoing in Buni Yadi, the headquarters of Gujba Local Government Area, while existing stadiums in Potiskum, Nguru and Yunusari will be rehabilitated.

Alhaji Abubakar said the projects form part of Governor Mai Mala Buni’s post-insurgency recovery plan aimed at reviving sporting activities and promoting unity among young people in the state. He noted that Yunusari, once affected by Boko Haram insurgency, has recorded improved security, allowing development projects to resume.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Information and Culture, Abdullahi Bego, said the rehabilitation of the 27 August Stadium in Damaturu reflects the government’s broader plan to improve sports infrastructure, develop talent and attract major sporting events. He said the upgraded facility will support multiple sports, including football, basketball, volleyball, handball, lawn tennis, hockey, para-soccer and karate.
