Twenty-one members of the Kano State House of Assembly have officially defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The announcement followed the resignation of Governor Abba Yusuf from the NNPP earlier this month.
The defections include Speaker Jibril Ismail Falgore representing Rogo and Deputy Speaker Muhammad Bello Butu Butu representing Tofa/Rimin Gado, alongside other principal members of the assembly such as the majority leader, deputy majority leader, and chief whip. Yusuf also resigned from the party along with eight members of the House of Representatives and all 44 local government chairmen in the state.
The governor cited “deepening internal crises” and “prolonged leadership disputes” within the NNPP as reasons for his resignation. The move comes days after Yusuf’s meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.

Rabiu Kwankwaso, national leader of the NNPP, condemned the mass defection, declaring January 23 as “World Betrayal Day.” Kwankwaso had played a key role in Yusuf’s election as governor in 2023 through his Kwankwasiyya movement.
