Senate President Godswill Akpabio has rejected mounting calls for his resignation, insisting he will not step down in the face of what he described as unfounded allegations.
Senator Akpabio has come under increasing pressure following accusations of sexual harassment by suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and separate claims linking him to electoral malpractice in 2019.
Addressing the Senate on Thursday, Senator Akpabio responded to Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele’s appeal for lawmakers to remain focused on legislative business, stating clearly that he would not be cowed into relinquishing his position. He characterised the allegations as baseless and vowed not to be a “victim of injustice.”

The Senate President also took issue with Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru, who had reportedly dismissed the Senate’s planned national security summit as unnecessary. Senator Akpabio insisted the Minister must attend in his official capacity, underscoring the summit’s significance in addressing the country’s security challenges.
