Two Senegalese opposition members of parliament, Mamadou Niang and Massata Samb, have been sentenced to six months in jail for physically attacking a female colleague during a parliamentary session.Â
Late last year, a video surfaced on social media showing pro-government legislator, Amy Ndiaye, being slapped and kicked in the belly during a session in the National Assembly that had turned violent.Â
The case drew attention from beyond Senegalese borders and is said to have sparked a debate about democracy in the country. MP Ndiaye was pregnant at the time of the assault. Â
Both men were also fined 100,000 CFA francs each and ordered to pay five million francs in damages.  Â
