China condemns new US tariffs

China has condemned new US tariffs targeting Beijing and 59 other countries over alleged forced labour violations, warning against renewed trade tensions.

“We oppose all forms of unilateral tariff measures,” Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said Friday, adding that “tariff wars and trade wars are not in the interests of any party.”

The new 10-12.5% tariffs replace an expiring global levy, with China receiving the highest rate. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Washington is enforcing forced-labour import bans and expects trading partners to do the same. Canada, the EU and the UK received the lower 10% rate; India and Japan face 12.5%.
