A Court of Appeal in Finland has begun hearing an international war crime case against Gibril Massaquoi, a Sierra Leonean man who has been charged with murder, rape, and other atrocities during the Liberian Civil War between 1999 and 2003.
Prosecutors argued the 53-year-old suspect committed the atrocities against civilians as a top official of the Revolutionary United Front, a militia that fought in Sierra Leone and in Liberia.

Last year, Mr. Massaquoi, who has lived in Finland for many years, was acquitted of all charges by a lower Finnish court which ruled that a significant doubt remained about his participation in the suspected acts due to witnesses changing their testimonies.
The session in the appeal court began yesterday and is expected to conclude in June.
