10th Assembly To Give Due Priority To Climate Change – Deputy Speaker

In a statement to mark the International Day of Parliamentarism yesterday, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, said climate change will be part of the legislative agendas of both chambers of the national assembly.

The Deputy Speaker stated that parliaments must take measures to reduce the world’s carbon emissions, and the 10th Assembly will lead by example.

This, he says, will entail making the parliament ‘green’ in its operations.

Honourable Kalu said parliament must review its mode of operation by adapting to new technologies and also considering the inclusion of women and youth as parliamentarians.

He added that by adopting greener policies and embracing a culture of sustainability, parliaments can help address the climate crisis and pave the way for stronger climate action.

The Deputy Speaker also noted that climate change is killing people and destroying lives, development, peace and security all over the world.
