The leaders of the coup in Gabon have named the head of the Republican Guard, General Brice Oligui Nguema as the country’s transitional president.
This was announced in a TV statement after the military seized control in the wake of national elections.
The statement says General Nguema was unanimously appointed chairman of the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions.

The military takeover has sparked condemnation from the African Union and alarm from Nigeria’s President and chairman of ECOWAS.
President Bola Tinubu described the recent trend as “contagious autocracy” in a continent where the military have seized power in five other countries since 2020.
