- The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office has sealed off Orchid Shopping Center’s premises located along Orchid Road, Eti-Osa, for discharging wastewater onto the road, creating environmental nuisance and endangering public health. This was disclosed in a statement shared on X by the state Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, on Friday. Mr. Wahab advised all persons or organisations in the habit of discharging untreated wastewater and sewage into the environment to desist or face sanctions.
- Floods in Niger State have resulted in the death of 11 people, devastating communities, and causing extensive damage across 19 out of the 25 local government areas in the state. According to reports, the floodwaters washed away 118,692 farmlands, plunging many residents into uncertainty as their means of livelihood have been severely impacted. Additionally, 246 schools were affected, disrupting education in 529 communities.
- The Defence Headquarters says, troops of the Armed Forces and other security agencies, have in the third quarter of 2024 killed 1,937 terrorists inclusive of 65 terrorist commanders, arrested 2,782 suspects, and rescued 1,854 kidnapped hostages. Addressing a news conference in Abuja, the Director, of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, says the offensive actions culminated in the death of several notable terrorist leaders, commanders, and combatants. While revealing that the troops recovered 1,304 weapons and 43,347 ammunition, General Buba added that with the support the Military is receiving from State governments, troops will continue to intensify the fight against terrorists and violent extremists until they are completely degraded.

- Oil companies now owe the Federal Government $6.175bn for tax and royalties. This is according to an audit of the petroleum industry by the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI). The oil and gas industry report, which was presented on Friday in Abuja, reveals a breakdown of $6.071bn and ₦66.4bn in unpaid royalties and gas flare penalties owed to the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) as of August 31, 2024.

- Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has condemned the United States for its continuing support for Israel’s war on Gaza, urging the international community to stop supplying weapons to Israel. In his first address to the 193-member General Assembly, since Israel launched the assault last October in response to an attack by the Palestinian group Hamas, he said “This madness cannot continue. The entire world is responsible for what is happening to our people” – in his own words.

- Former Chelsea coach, Graham Potter, has taken responsibility for Chelsea’s poor run of form during his time in charge of the club. This is according to a statement obtained from Fabrizio Romano’s X handle on Friday. Chelsea appointed Potter in September 2022 after Thomas Tuchel was sacked. They paid Brighton around £21m in compensation for the manager and a host of his backroom staff. Although Potter signed a five-year contract, he was relieved of his job after less than seven months in charge.
