Amnesty demands rescue of abducted Niger worshippers as numbers remain unclear

Human rights group Amnesty International has demanded the rescue of worshippers abducted from a mosque in Niger State, as the number of victims remains unclear four days after the attack.

Terrorists abducted an unspecified number of worshippers during Friday prayers on August 21st, in Kpenya, Dekara district, Borgu local government area. Residents say more than eighty people may have been taken from several mosques. In a video released Sunday, terrorists claimed to have abducted about 500 people, including women and children.

The Niger State government says it still cannot confirm how many people were abducted. Commissioner Obed Nana said a joint security operation has been deployed to track the attackers and urged residents not to spread unverified figures.
