22 Feared Dead in Mining Pit Collapse at Taraba-Adamawa Illegal Mining Site

At least 22 miners are feared dead after a mining pit collapsed at an illegal site within a national game reserve spanning Gashaka Local Government Area in Taraba State and Toungo Local Government Area in Adamawa State.

Mr. Adamu Jamtare, a miner from Gashaka, stated that many of those presumed dead were from Jamtare town in Gashaka LGA. The Chairman of Toungo LGA, Engineer Suleiman Toungo, confirmed that five bodies had been recovered but could not verify the number still buried.

The incident, involving miners from across Nigeria, including Zamfara and Adamawa, reportedly occurred nearly a month ago. Engineer Toungo noted that despite ranger patrols in the area, illegal mining operations continued, often conducted covertly at night.

The national game reserve, rich in mineral resources, has witnessed repeated tragedies over the years due to unregulated mining, highlighting ongoing safety concerns in the region.
