Senator Ali Ndume has criticised the rush to pass the controversial tax reform bills, raising concerns about the Presidency’s urgency and urging a more deliberate approach. Speaking on Thursday, the Borno South lawmaker backed the National Economic Council’s advice for President Bola Tinubu to withdraw the bills, stating that such reforms are ill-timed as Nigerians face economic hardships.
The Senator cited the lengthy process it took to pass the Petroleum Industry Bill as an example of thorough legislative scrutiny, contrasting it with the rapid progression of the tax bills. He emphasised that his opposition is not against taxation itself but against the timing of the proposed reforms.

The bills, transmitted to the National Assembly on October 3, passed their second reading in the Senate on Thursday through voice votes, despite mounting controversy. Ndume has maintained that delaying the reforms would allow for better consultation and consideration of Nigerians’ current economic struggles.
