The Nigerian Army has claimed that investigative journalist Fisayo Soyombo, founder of the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), was arrested at an illegal oil bunkering site in Port Harcourt.
Responding to reports that Soyombo has been detained by the 6 Division of the Army for three days, the acting deputy director of public relations, Major Danjuma Danjuma, described the reports as “misleading.” He stated that troops recently uncovered a notorious gang involved in oil theft and linked Soyombo’s arrest to their operation.
The arrest has sparked widespread calls for Soyombo’s immediate release, with many defending him as a journalist dedicated to exposing corruption. Recently, Soyombo accused the Nigeria Customs Service of complicity in smuggling and shared video evidence to support his claims.

The circumstances surrounding his arrest remain unclear, as advocacy groups continue to push for a transparent investigation into the allegations. The Nigerian Army maintains that the arrest was tied to ongoing anti-oil theft operations.
