Okonjo-Iweala Reappointed WTO Director-General for a Second Term
The Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala

Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been reappointed as the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) for a second term. Her reappointment was confirmed by consensus during a special General Council meeting held behind closed doors on Thursday.

Okonjo-Iweala, who made history as the first woman and first African to lead the WTO, was the sole candidate for the position. Her current term, set to end on 31 August 2025, will seamlessly transition into her next mandate.

African nations reportedly pushed for an expedited reappointment process, citing the need to prepare for the WTO’s upcoming ministerial conference scheduled for 2026 in Cameroon.
