Retired military officers under the Coalition of Military Pensioners on Thursday shut down the Federal Ministry of Finance in Abuja, protesting the non-payment of their 20% to 28% salary increment for January to November 2024. The retirees, drawn from various chapters across the country, expressed frustration over the Federal Government’s failure to fulfil their entitlements.
The protesters are demanding several payments, including palliatives from October 2023 to November 2024, a N32,000 pension increment, the bulk payment of their Security Debarment Allowance (SDA), and the refund of deductions from the pensions of medically discharged soldiers.
Meanwhile, the Senate had announced plans in December 2023 to investigate the Military Pensions Board. This was disclosed by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriation, Olamilekan Adeola, during the defence of the Senate Committee on Establishment and Public Service’s budget report.

During the session, an additional N20 billion was requested to construct a new office building for the Military Pensions Board and renovate phases 1 to 4 of the Federal Secretariat. The Chairman questioned the board’s operations, budget utilisation, and the number of retirees on its payroll.
