Relatives of military officers facing trial over an alleged coup plot against President Bola Tinubu have staged a peaceful protest at the Ministry of Justice in Abuja, demanding an open trial and the release of the detained suspects.
Security personnel prevented the protesters from entering the ministry during Monday’s demonstration, which followed complaints over restrictions placed on journalists and family members during recent court proceedings involving some of the accused officers.
Speaking on behalf of the protesters, Justice Isimili appealed to President Tinubu to show mercy, saying many of the detainees’ families had travelled from states including Kano, Plateau and Sokoto. The protesters also criticised what they described as secretive court-martial proceedings.

The suspects are facing charges including treason, terrorism, money laundering and failure to disclose information. Some are being tried before a court-martial in Abuja, while others are appearing before civilian courts.
