Emir of Kano Barred from Attending Royal Ceremony Amid Tight Security

Muhammadu Sanusi II

Heavily armed policemen barricaded the palace of the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, on Thursday, preventing him from attending a royal ceremony in Bichi Local Government Area. The event was to feature the presentation of a staff of office to the new District Head of Bichi.

According to sources within the Kano Emirate, security personnel, including armoured personnel carriers (APCs), restricted all movement in and out of the palace. “The Emir was ready to leave for the ceremony when security operatives ordered him to remain indoors,” an anonymous source disclosed.

Attempts by Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf to resolve the situation were reportedly thwarted, as his delegation was also denied access to the palace. The venue of the Bichi event was similarly cordoned off by security forces, leaving attendees and organisers stranded.

The Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna, declined to comment on the incident. The lack of official statements from both the state government and the Emirate Council has fuelled widespread speculation about possible political motives behind the security action.
