NSIB Releases Preliminary Report on October 2024 Helicopter Crash off Bonny Coast

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has released its preliminary findings into the crash of a Sikorsky helicopter operated by Eastwind Aviation, which plunged into the Atlantic Ocean on October 24, 2024.

The helicopter, with registration 5N-BQG, was carrying eight passengers when it went down off the coast of Bonny Finima near Port Harcourt during a routine operation for the FPSO Nuim Antan facility. The flight was part of a drop-off and pick-up mission for oil workers.

Presenting the report, the Director-General of the NSIB, Captain Alex Badeh Jr, disclosed that adverse weather conditions, coupled with inaccurate meteorological reports, played a significant role in the crash. The crew attempted to adjust the helicopter’s payload and altitude in response to the deteriorating conditions but were unable to regain control.

The helicopter reportedly disintegrated on impact with the ocean. Alongside this report, the NSIB also presented six final reports on earlier aircraft incidents as part of its commitment to improving aviation safety standards in Nigeria.
