The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has launched a probe into a collision between the container vessel MV Maersk Valparaiso and the oil tanker MT Lady Martina at Bonny Anchorage in Rivers State on May 20, 2026, categorising the event as a Very Serious Marine Casualty.
The Bureau stated in a release on Friday that it activated its emergency response procedures upon receiving the alert and sent an investigation team to Onne and Bonny on May 22, 2026, to secure evidence and begin preliminary inquiries. Investigators boarded both ships, conducted interviews with the captains and essential crew members, and collected operational logs and navigation records relevant to the incident.

The Bureau has successfully extracted data from the Voyage Data Recorder and Electronic Chart Display and Information System of the MV Maersk Valparaiso for forensic and navigation analysis. In line with the International Maritime Organisation’s Casualty Investigation Code and Nigeria’s treaty obligations, the NSIB has officially notified Singapore’s Transport Safety Investigation Bureau, given Singapore’s status as a substantially interested state.
The NSIB assured the public and maritime industry that the investigation is being carried out with the highest standards of professionalism and independence.
