The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has refuted claims that its Statistician-General, Adeniran Adeyemi, was invited for questioning by the Department of State Services (DSS). This follows the release of a controversial report on ransom payments in Nigeria.
On December 17, the NBS published its Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey, revealing that Nigerians paid N2.23 trillion as ransom between May 2023 and April 2024. The report triggered widespread reactions both locally and internationally.

Barely 24 hours after the report’s release, the NBS website was hacked, displaying a “Page hacked” message on its landing page. Speculations soon emerged that Adeyemi was being interrogated by the DSS over the report’s data and methodology.
However, Ichedi Sunday, Head of Communications at the NBS, dismissed the claims, insisting that the statistician-general was never summoned by the DSS.
