The Federal Government has initiated immediate payment of outstanding allowances owed to retired military personnel following a day-long protest at the Ministry of Finance headquarters in Abuja.
The protest, which began at 7 a.m., saw the retirees barricading the ministry’s entrance with makeshift structures, including canopies and chairs, effectively halting vehicular access. Ministry staff were forced to leave their vehicles outside the premises, as the demonstrators maintained their blockade.

The retired servicemen are demanding payment of a 20% to 28% salary increment covering January to November 2024, along with arrears of other entitlements. These include palliatives for the period between October 2023 and November 2024, an additional ₦32,000 monthly pension adjustment, and the disbursement of the Security Debarment Allowance.
They further called for a refund of pension deductions from the salaries of soldiers retired on medical grounds.
In response to the demonstration, government officials assured the retirees that the disbursement process had commenced, aiming to address the grievances and restore normalcy to the ministry’s operations.
