FG bans use of ‘Dr’ title by honorary degree holders

The Federal Government has barred recipients of honorary degrees from using the title “Dr” before their names. The directive was announced on Wednesday in Abuja by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa.

The minister said the decision was taken at the Federal Executive Council meeting held on April 30, 2026, and is aimed at addressing what he described as the growing abuse of honorary degrees.

He said the awards have increasingly been used for political patronage and financial gain, adding that the practice undermines academic integrity.

Alausa warned that universities which fail to comply will face sanctions, and said all institutions must now obtain approval from the National Universities Commission before awarding honorary degrees.
