UN Condemns Mass Killing of Civilians in Borno State

The United Nations has condemned the recent mass killing of civilians in Kukawa, Borno State, Northeastern Nigeria. At least 40 people were killed on January 12th, 2025, in Dumba community, reportedly by members of a non-state armed group. The victims, mostly farmers and fishermen, were allegedly targeted for violating a ban on farming imposed by the armed group.

The Humanitarian Coordinator of the UN in Nigeria, Mohamed Malick, described the attack as horrifying. In a statement, Malick expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims and wished those injured a swift recovery. The UN reaffirmed its solidarity with the people and the Government of Borno State during this tragic time.

Malick also called for the perpetrators to be identified and brought to justice, demanding that the full force of the law be applied. He emphasised that this attack highlights the ongoing dangers civilians face in conflict-affected areas of Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe states.

The UN’s statement serves as a grim reminder of the persistent insecurity in the region, where local populations continue to endure violence at the hands of non-state armed groups despite ongoing efforts for peace and stability.
