Palestinian American journalist Ali Abunimah has confirmed that he was released and deported by Swiss authorities after being detained for three days. The executive director of the Electronic Intifada publication was arrested in Zurich on Saturday ahead of a planned speech, sparking outrage among Palestinian rights advocates.
In a social media post on Monday, Abunimah suggested that his detention was linked to his advocacy for Palestinian rights. Swiss authorities reportedly cited an entry ban and other immigration-related measures as the reason for his arrest, according to Reuters.

Abunimah’s detention has drawn widespread condemnation, with many seeing it as an attempt to silence Palestinian voices. The Swiss embassy in Washington, DC, has yet to respond to requests for comment on the incident.
Abunimah was held until his deportation, but further details about the specific nature of the immigration measures remain unclear.
