Nigeria Police Charge Omoyele Sowore with Cybercrime Over Social Media Posts

Omoyele Sowore, convener of the #RevolutionNow protest, has been arraigned by the Nigeria Police Force on charges of cybercrime before Justice Musa Liman at the Federal High Court in Abuja. Sowore was arrested after responding to a police invitation on January 27, 2025, and questioned at the Force Criminal Investigation Department.

Despite being granted administrative bail, Sowore rejected the bail conditions and remained in police custody. The police later filed a 16-count charge against him, including allegations related to his social media posts. In one of the charges, Sowore is accused of calling the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, the “illegal IG of Nigeria Police Force” in a December 2024 post on X (formerly Twitter).

The police also allege that Sowore posted a picture of Egbetokun with a caption criticising the police and the state of the country. Sowore is further accused of stating that Egbetokun would “destroy the Nigeria police” unless action was taken.

Sowore pleaded not guilty to all 16 counts of cybercrime and is facing legal proceedings in relation to the charges.
