Rwanda-backed forces in the Democratic Republic of the Congo have announced a unilateral ceasefire starting today, pausing their advance across the east of the country for humanitarian reasons. The M23 rebel coalition, which seized the key city of Goma last week, says the halt is to allow for humanitarian aid, although it remains unclear if the DRC government will recognize or respect the ceasefire.
The rebels, who have also advanced towards the city of Bukavu, had previously declared intentions to move towards the capital, Kinshasa. However, they have stated they will not attack Bukavu, a major regional hub. Despite the ceasefire, the United Nations reports at least 900 deaths in Goma, with the actual toll likely much higher.

Authorities have also reported nearly 3,000 people were injured during the fighting last week, and calls are growing for a humanitarian corridor to help the displaced. Hundreds of thousands have been forced to flee their homes, adding to the escalating crisis in the region.
