Six people have been killed in suspected herdsmen attacks on the Okpamaju community in Okete Ward and Asa settlement in Ewulo Ward, Otukpo Local Government Area, Benue State. The attacks, which have lasted for three days, have left many injured, displaced, and several villages destroyed. Lawmaker Kennedy Angbo, who represents Otukpo-Akpa in the Benue State House of Assembly, confirmed the violence, stating the community was severely affected.
Angbo also revealed that the attacks have disrupted public peace in the region, with the Federal University of Health Sciences in Otukpo seeing heightened fear among students over the security situation. The local police confirmed the deaths, with the Police Public Relations Officer Sewuese Anene reporting two fatalities on Wednesday.
Anene explained that the violence stemmed from a clash over open grazing on farmland in Okpamaju, Okete Ward. Villagers had raised complaints about the destruction of their crops, leading to the deadly confrontation.
Benue State has long faced violence from suspected herdsmen, with ongoing attacks on farmers. While the state government under Governor Hyacinth Alia claims progress in addressing the issue, incidents of killings and insecurity continue, leaving rural communities vulnerable.
