Nigerian Army Cracks Down on Oil Theft, Arrests 29 Suspects

Troops of the 6 Division, Nigerian Army, in collaboration with other security agencies, have arrested 29 suspected oil thieves and dismantled 24 illegal refining sites in a week-long operation from 3 to 9 February 2025.  

According to Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, the troops destroyed 11 boats and recovered over 60,000 litres of stolen petroleum products.

Operations along the Imo River led to the deactivation of six refining sites, the destruction of 113 drum pots and 83 drum receivers, and the demobilisation of two boats carrying 18,000 litres of stolen fuel. Similar operations took place in Asa, Obigbo, and Asari-Toru LGAs.  

In Delta State, troops seized over 70 sacks of stolen petroleum products, around 2,800 litres, near the SEEPCO Energy pipeline in Okpai Oluchi. The military vows to sustain pressure on oil theft syndicates.
