Inspector-General of Police Calls for Closed-Door Senate Probe on Missing Rifles
Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun

Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has urged the Nigerian Senate to conduct a private investigation into the alleged disappearance of 3,907 assault rifles, citing national security concerns.

In a letter to Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Thursday, Egbetokun dismissed the 2019 Auditor-General’s report, which claimed thousands of police rifles were unaccounted for as of January 2020.

His appeal follows a public hearing where police officials struggled to clarify discrepancies in the audit. The IGP expressed gratitude for the Senate’s scrutiny but requested time for an internal police inquiry.

He also urged lawmakers to hold future security-related hearings behind closed doors to prevent misinterpretation and safeguard national security.

The letter came 48 hours after the contentious hearing, amid growing concerns over accountability in the nation’s security apparatus.
