FG Backs AU Reforms, Signs Sea Lift MOU for Maritime Support

Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to supporting reforms within the African Union (AU). As part of this effort, Nigeria has signed the Sea Lift Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), pledging to provide maritime support to facilitate the transportation of troops, equipment, and supplies by sea when needed.

“The signing of the Sea Lift MOU was the AU. Nigeria pledged to support the AU with the Sea Lift. That is moving soldiers, equipment and others by sea when needed. This is in support of the African Stand-by Force operationalization. This is indeed a very big step and it really shows the strength of Nigeria and our capability to support Africa.”

Nigeria’s endorsement of AU reforms aims to make the continental body more effective and responsive to member states’ needs. Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu has backed the proposal to establish a Heads of State and Government Oversight Committee, led by Kenya’s President William Ruto, to oversee the reform process. Additionally, the government supports limiting the AU Summit agenda to three strategic issues to enhance efficiency.

However, President Tinubu has opposed the proposed split of the AU’s Department of Political Affairs, Peace, and Security. He argued that such a move would lead to unnecessary expenses and could undermine the AU’s peace and security operations.
