IGP Deploys Additional Squads to Osun as Violence Claims Six Lives

Six people have been confirmed dead in Osun State following a violent crisis triggered by a contentious Court of Appeal ruling, which reportedly reinstated All Progressives Congress (APC)-elected local government chairmen and councillors. The Osun State Police Command confirmed the deaths on Tuesday, adding that the injured are currently receiving treatment in hospitals across the state.

Governor Ademola Adeleke raised concerns on Sunday, alleging that a conspiracy led by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola, along with heads of security agencies, was attempting to enforce the controversial ruling. Adeleke called on the public to hold Oyetola and the state’s security chiefs accountable for any ensuing violence.

In response to the escalating violence, Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has ordered the deployment of additional tactical squads to Osun State to restore law and order. The IGP also warned against instigating further violence, stressing that the police would not tolerate lawlessness or anarchy.

The IGP condemned the violence in a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, and pledged to bring all those responsible for the unrest to justice, reaffirming the commitment of the police to peace and accountability in the state.
