Governor Adeleke Insists on Osun LG Elections Despite AGF’s Warning

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has insisted that the local government elections scheduled for Saturday will proceed, despite a call from the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, to suspend the polls.

In a statement on Friday, Adeleke’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, emphasised that democracy is guided by the rule of law and that no individual can override court decisions. The AGF had warned that holding the elections would be unconstitutional, as the Court of Appeal in Akure had recently reinstated the previously sacked local government chairmen.

Fagbemi argued that the reinstated officials’ tenure remains valid until October 2025, making any new election unlawful. He cautioned that proceeding with the vote would be an “egregious breach” of the Constitution, which Adeleke swore to uphold.
