Physicians for Human Rights Israel (PHRI) has accused Israel of systematically targeting Palestinian healthcare workers in Gaza, detaining them without charge, and subjecting them to mistreatment.
A report by the Israeli rights group details testimonies from more than two dozen Palestinian medical professionals, including doctors, nurses, and paramedics, aged between 21 and 69. According to PHRI, they were held in isolation for over six months after being seized by Israeli forces.

The findings suggest that detentions were primarily aimed at intelligence gathering rather than investigating criminal activity or combat involvement. Those interviewed described being held in military and prison facilities, where they allegedly faced near-daily abuse, including beatings, starvation, and sensory overload. Some reported being attacked by dogs, burned with boiling water, or subjected to sexual violence.
PHRI’s report, released on Wednesday, raises serious concerns over the treatment of medical personnel in Israeli custody.
