NLC Opposes Government’s Plan to Adjust Electricity Tariffs

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has rejected a proposed tariff adjustment by the Federal Government, warning of nationwide protests if the plan proceeds.

In a statement issued on Sunday after its National Executive Council meeting in Yola, the union condemned the move to upgrade lower-tier electricity consumers to Band A. The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, had announced the plan last Thursday, saying lower bands would be adjusted accordingly.

NLC General Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja, criticised what he described as the ‘forceful migration’ of consumers, arguing that rising inflation, stagnant wages, and a worsening cost of living have left Nigerians struggling. The union accused the ruling class of shifting the burden of economic mismanagement onto the working poor.

Last year, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission approved a tariff increase, setting the price at around N250 per unit for Band A customers.
