The Nigeria Labour Congress says it is preparing for a nationwide campaign to review the national minimum wage, while also pushing for a new national minimum pension to improve conditions for retirees.
NLC President Joe Ajaero made the announcement while commissioning the Godwin Abumisi Pensioners’ Legacy House and Multipurpose Hall in Abuja over the weekend, saying organised labour would no longer campaign for higher wages without also demanding better welfare for pensioners. “The Nigeria Labour Congress is currently in the preparatory stages for a major national struggle for a comprehensive review of the national minimum wage,” he said.
Ajaero described the current state of many retirees as a “historical injustice,” blaming rising inflation and cost-of-living pressures for eroding pension values, and called on pensioners nationwide to remain united ahead of the coming mobilisation.
He demanded immediate payment of outstanding pension arrears and a pension system guaranteeing retirees financial security, calling the newly commissioned Legacy House a future hub for labour mobilisation and solidarity as the campaign takes shape.
