FCCPC Files Charge Against MultiChoice For Ignoring Regulatory Directives

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, FCCPC, has taken legal action against MultiChoice Nigeria Limited and its Chief Executive Officer, John Ugbe, over alleged non-compliance with regulatory directives and obstruction of an inquiry.

The case, filed at the Federal High Court in Lagos, accuses the company of unilaterally implementing a price increase despite instructions to the contrary, an offence under Section 33(4) of the FCCPC Act.

Additional charges include failing to suspend the hike, violating Section 110, and allegedly misleading regulators by proceeding without formal objections, contrary to Section 159(2) of the FCCPA 2018 Act.

MultiChoice had announced new pricing for its DStv and GOtv services on 24 February, with the adjustments due to take effect from 1 March. The move, coming less than a year after a previous increase, triggered public outcry, prompting regulatory intervention.
