Isale Eko Community, Filmmakers Reach Agreement Over Gangs of Lagos Controversy

A Lagos High Court has approved a settlement between the Isale Eko Descendants’ Union, IDU, and the producers of ‘Gangs of Lagos’, resolving a dispute over the film’s portrayal of the Eyo Masquerade.

The legal challenge followed the release of the film on Amazon Prime Video in April 2023, which sparked criticism from residents who described it as a ‘defamatory depiction’ of Isale Eko as a criminal hub and the Eyo Masquerade as violent gang members.

The IDU had sought N10 billion in damages from Amazon and the filmmakers. However, Justice Idowu Alakija, presiding over the case, confirmed that both sides had agreed to an amicable resolution.

The Attorney-General of Lagos State and the Lagos State Film and Video Censors Board were named as respondents in the lawsuit.
