Senate to Reintroduce Statutory Delegates in Electoral Act Amendment Ahead of 2027 Polls

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has announced plans to amend the 2022 Electoral Act to reinstate statutory delegates in political party primaries ahead of the 2027 general election.

Speaking during a meeting with the leadership of the Nigerian Bar Association in Abuja, Akpabio described the omission of statutory delegates in the Act as an error that must be corrected. He noted that the exclusion of key political figures, including the President, Vice President, Governors, and lawmakers, from the 2022 primaries and 2023 elections created what he termed ‘super-delegates.’

The Senate President argued that the absence of statutory delegates had restricted broader participation in candidate selection, leaving the process solely to ad hoc delegates. He stressed that this imbalance needed to be addressed to enhance democracy and ensure a more inclusive primary system for legislative, gubernatorial, and presidential elections.
