Canada Rejects Over 13,000 Nigerian Asylum Claims in a Decade

More than 13,000 Nigerians have been denied refugee status in Canada over the past ten years, official data shows.

Figures from Canada’s Refugee Protection Division indicate that between January 2013 and December 2024, thousands of Nigerian asylum claims were unsuccessful, including 811 in the past year alone. The highest number of rejections came in 2019, when nearly 4,000 applications were turned down.

Nigeria was among the five countries with the most asylum rejections last year, with Mexico topping the list at 2,954 refusals, followed by India, Haiti, and Colombia.

Under Canadian immigration law, asylum seekers must demonstrate that they meet the UN’s criteria for refugee status in order to be granted protection.
