A former presidential adviser has suggested that northern Nigeria will soon declare its political direction ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning that no presidential candidate can succeed without the region’s backing.
Mr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, who previously served as Special Adviser on Political Matters to President Bola Tinubu, made the remarks in a video interview that gained widespread attention on social media over the weekend.

Appearing alongside Professor Usman Yusuf, former head of the National Health Insurance Scheme, Baba-Ahmed said the North is increasingly politically assertive and would no longer endorse candidates who fail to engage meaningfully with its challenges.
He stressed that the region’s position will be clarified within six months, adding that northern voters are prepared to set clear expectations in the run-up to the next election cycle.
Mr. Baba-Ahmed is widely regarded for his forthright advocacy on issues affecting northern Nigeria.
