NEC Postpones State Police Talks for Third Time Amid Time Constraints

The National Economic Council has, for the third time, deferred deliberations on the proposed creation of state police, citing limited time following extended briefings during its latest session.

The meeting, held on Thursday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, was chaired by Vice-President Kashim Shettima and attended by state governors, including the sole administrator of Rivers State, Ibok-Ete Ibas.

Speaking to journalists after the session, Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri confirmed that the issue had been listed on the agenda but was once again shelved due to the day’s packed schedule.

Discussions on state policing, widely seen as a potential response to Nigeria’s growing security challenges, have been repeatedly postponed by the council since late 2023, with no firm date yet set for a comprehensive review.
