The National Economic Council has approved 112 as the country’s unified national emergency response number. The decision was taken at the Council’s 157th meeting held virtually on Thursday and chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

The Council says the move is aimed at strengthening emergency response coordination across all levels of government and relevant agencies. It also approved the creation of a multi-agency implementation committee to be led by the Office of the Vice President and the Nigerian Communications Commission.

Vice President Shettima said the initiative is designed to eliminate delays caused by bureaucracy and ensure faster response to emergencies such as accidents, insecurity, and natural disasters. He noted that citizens need a single, reliable number to access help quickly.
