The Federal Government has unveiled a series of new safety protocols aimed at curbing fatalities on Nigeria’s waterways. These include compulsory use of life jackets and the gradual elimination of unsafe wooden boats.
The announcement came during a marine safety awareness forum in Minna, where the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola, also oversaw the distribution of 3,500 life jackets to stakeholders from 12 states.

Niger State, identified as the nation’s deadliest zone for boat accidents, was selected as the launch site. The event gathered operators, local leaders, and officials from the National Inland Waterways Authority.
Speaker of the State Assembly, Abdulmalik Sarkindaji, who stood in for Governor Umaru Bago, welcomed the initiative as a long-overdue step towards safeguarding lives.
