The Federal Government plans to increase functional primary healthcare centres from 1,800 in 2023 to 17,000 by 2027, according to the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Pate.

The announcement was made at the Nigeria Medical Association’s 5th annual delegates meeting in Katsina, where the minister, represented by Dr Suleiman Bello of the Federal Teaching Hospital, commended the conference’s focus on patient care standards and the evolving role of doctors in public policy.

In a related development, the Ministry has inaugurated the National Tertiary Health Institutions Standards Committee, mandated to define and enforce service benchmarks across federal tertiary hospitals, in line with provisions of the National Health Act.

Officials view these steps as pivotal in bolstering healthcare delivery and governance in Nigeria’s overstretched health system.
